Pines
of Sarasot a
has a caring tradition that began in 1948. In the early 1940s concerned
citizens became aware of the fact that Sarasota was in d esperate need of a
nursing home to care for elderly citizens with poor health and limited
incomes. Recognizing this need, the Kiwanis Club of Sarasota voted to
accept the awesome responsibility. In
December 1943 the club began raising funds and by March 1948 the members
had raised $40,000. Land was purchased at 12th Street and Orange Avenue,
and two resident halls and a dining room were erected. Sarasota Welfare
Home, Inc., opened its doors on November 16, 1948. At that time, The
Kiwanis Club elected to turn over the entire property to a newly formed
nonprofit corporation, Sarasota Welfare Home, Inc., sponsored by
representative citizens of the community. In 1988, the Home's name was
changed to Pines of Sarasota, Inc.
