SHOPPING: Often
new and discontinued merchandise from department stores and local
merchants is offered for sale in addition to "nearly new" items
donated by individuals throughout the community. The variety appears to be
endless, with everything from toys and bowling balls to fine jewelry and
sable coats.
DONATING: Since
the Thrift Shop is not a consignment shop, it is wholly dependent on the
generosity of the community for donations. There are no limitations or
restrictions on donations and you may arrange for a pickup of large or
bulky items. Furniture and major appliances are in constant demand, but
donations of all types will be received with great appreciation.
VOLUNTEERING: Operated
by fifty-six volunteers and a manager, the Thrift Shop offers many
opportunities for community service. Volunteers perform an endless variety
of tasks, including receiving donations, customer assistance,
straightening, pricing, and ringing up the sales. Most volunteers
contribute a minimum of one half-day a week. A gift of time to the Thrift
Shop benefits the 300 Pines of Sarasota residents and day clients as well as the
community through the proceeds of the sales.
PROCEEDS:
The majority of residents at Pines of Sarasota receive financial
assistance. The proceeds from sales at the Thrift Shop are used to
purchase items for the general needs of residents. Since 1974, the
Thrift Shop Guild has donated carpeting for the chapel, a diesel mowing
tractor, mattresses, ceiling fans, whirlpool tubs, draperies and blinds,
furniture, color televisions, kitchen remodeling and refrigeration, and a
remodeled dining room. The Thrift Shop Guild raised and contributed
$300,000 toward the building of the on-site 72-bed assisted living center.
All donations to the Thrift Shop,
whether items you no longer use or a few hours a week of your
time, are greatly appreciate by the residents, staff, and volunteers at
Pines. Please call us with any questions (941)
552-1849.
